Virat Kohli fined for slow over rate against Rajasthan Royals

The stand-in skipper for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Rajasthan Royals match, Virat Kohli, received a hefty fine of Rs 24 lakh after his team failed to complete its overs at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday, April 23. The whole Bangalore playing XI, including Impact Player Faf du Plessis, has been fined 25% of their match earnings, not just Kohli.

In a press release on Monday night, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) stated that RCB had broken the regulations from the Rajasthan match.

The release said

“Royal Challengers Bangalore, who had named Mr. Virat Kohli as their Captain for their game against Rajasthan Royals, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Rajasthan Royals at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on April 23, 2023. As it was his team’s second offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offenses, Mr. Kohli has been fined Rs. 24 lakh and each member of the Playing XI, including the impact substitute, is fined Rs. 6 lakh or 25 percent of the match fee, whichever is lesser,” IPL wrote in their release.

On Sunday, Rajasthan Royals suffered a seven-run defeat against Royal Challengers Bangalore. With RR in serious difficulty and defending 189 runs, Mohammed Siraj claimed the crucial wicket of Jos Buttler in the first over. Padikkal and Jaiswal, though, stabilized RR innings. The game appeared to be out of RCB’s control at one point, but the home club staged an incredible comeback to secure the victory.

When batting first, RCB suffered a bad defeat after losing two fast wickets. To put the pressure back on the bowling side, Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell attacked the RR bowlers. Trent Boult and Sandeep Sharma each claimed two wickets for RR.
