The BBL 2024-25 match between Sydney Thunder and Sydney Sixers was abandoned due to a very bizarre circumstance. Safety concerns erupted at the SCG on Friday after a partial roof collapse. Strong winds caused a piece of vinyl soffit in the O’Reilly Stand to loosen and eventually fall. However, the ground staff were quick to evacuate the spectators.
The New South Wales (NSW) management confirmed that venue staff identified the issue with the loose vinyl soffit during severe winds and storms. “Patrons were immediately evacuated from the area to ensure their safety,” read an official statement. After the area was cleared, the vinyl soffit detached completely. Two seating bays were evacuated, and fans were relocated to another grandstand.
The statement further noted, “Pre-event inspections were conducted as per standard processes before gates opened. Additional inspections are underway. The safety of our patrons remains our number one priority.”

Heavy rain compounded the problems at SCG, allowing only 5.1 overs of play before the match was called off. Sydney Thunder, who were invited to bat first, managed to score 36 runs for the loss of Sam Konstas.
The young right-hander, who recently debuted in the Boxing Day Test, was dismissed for nine runs off 14 balls by Jack Edwards. Meanwhile, David Warner was batting confidently on 22 from 14 balls when the umpires decided to abandon the game.
Both teams earned one point each from the no-result. Both Sydney teams have secured their places in the playoffs. Sydney Sixers will now face the Hobart Hurricanes in the qualifier at Bellerive Oval on January 21. The winner of this match will book a direct ticket to the final.
David Warner’s Thunder will take on the fourth-placed team in the knockout match at Sydney Showground Stadium on January 22. The winner of the knockout will face the loser of the qualifier in the challenger match on January 24. The grand finale of BBL 2024-25 is scheduled for January 27.
