What Dhoni Told Joginder Sharma Ahead of the Final Over in T20 World Cup Final?

Today marks the 14th anniversary of India’s inaugural T20 World Cup win. The name that became famous overnight, the cricketer Joginder Sharma who was the hero of the win, revealed what MS Dhoni had told him before the important final over.

MS Dhoni had two choice to hand over the ball to. The experienced Harbhajan Singh and the not so known Joginder Sharma. He chose to go with the second with Misbah ul Haq still in the middle aiming to take Pakistan to the finishing line. Pakistan had one wicket in hand and the final over saw Sharma taking that to win the thriller for India.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, he revealed what Dhoni had told him before the final over. “Don’t think about the runs that they need, think about your bowling. If you get hit, don’t over-think, just concentrate on the next ball. Whatever is the result, be confident you have my support,” Dhoni had told the rookie. Sharma in the interview opined,
“Going into such a tense situation, it’s the biggest support that a bowler can imagine. The final over was close especially after Misbah-ul-Haq had hit me for a six off the second ball. But then Sreesanth took that catch and the rest is history.”
