ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 has started with all glories. From the first match, excitement is high. Fans started cheering for their teams. In the first match, England faced New Zealand. English was the World Champion of the 2019 World Cup. but New Zealand beat them by nine wickets in the first match of the tournament.
Every team wants to give their best at this big stage. They want to lift the biggest trophy once in a lifetime. England, New Zealand, Pakistan, and the Netherlands started their World Cup journey. Sri Lanka will start their journey on October 7 against South Africa. But before starting their World Cup journey, the Sri Lankan squad received bad news
What is the matter?
On October 7, Sri Lanka will face South Africa in Delhi. But Maheesh Theekshana will not be a part of this match. He sustained a hamstring injury in the Asia Cup. He is not fully fit for today’s match. This is a setback for Sri Lanka. Theekshana is a spin star of the team, his absence is a big blow for the team. Wanindu Hasaranga is also out of the team now. Dunith Wellalage and Dhananjaya de Silva will take responsibility for the spin side.
Coach’s sayings:
English player Chris Silverwood is the current coach of the Sri Lankan team. He gave the update about Theekshana’s injury. He said, “Theekshana is still recovering from a hamstring injury, so he won’t be available for this game. But we expect him to be available very soon. The rest of them are fine.”
Later, the Sri Lankan coach talked about Dasun Shanaka’s performance and their loss in the Asia Cup. he said, “ Well, I mean, first and foremost, we’re prepared to the best of our abilities. We’ve been treated very well since we’ve been here at some great facilities from a team point of view, we know on our day we can go toe-to-toe with anybody.”
Later he added, “So, we prepare in exactly the same way all the time and injuries may happen and we have to deal with them the same as any other team does but we know given the right conditions, given the right day we can go toe-to-toe with anybody. We will be going out there looking to win as always but we expect a very tough game tomorrow.”
Both teams will participate with all their strength. Sri Lanka is not in their best form. They lost the Asia Cup final to India by a big margin. In that final match, they could not stand for long in front of the Indian bowlers. They just got all out in just 50 runs. India snatched a big 10-wicket win in that tournament.
On the other hand, South Africa is in great form. They defeated Australia by 3-2 in an ODI series just before the World Cup. They defeated Australia by a margin of more than 100 runs. That was a huge boost for them before the World Cup.
