In a surprising turn of events, Bangladeshi cricket fan Rabi-ul-Islam, popularly known as Tiger Robi, has been sent back to Bangladesh following a controversial incident during the ongoing second Test match between India and Bangladesh in Kanpur. Reports indicate that Robi, who claimed to have been assaulted by fellow fans, later retracted his statement, attributing his distress to health issues.
Initial Claims and Health Concerns
On the first day of the Test at Green Park Stadium, Robi was seen visibly distressed and was escorted out of the stadium by medical personnel. Initially, he alleged that he had been punched in the abdomen during an altercation with Indian spectators. However, in a video message recorded from his hospital bed, he clarified:
“I fell ill and the police brought me to the hospital. Now I am feeling much better.”
Robi’s health complications were linked to his ongoing battle with metastatic cancer, which he had come to India to treat on a medical visa. Additional DCP (Local Intelligence Unit) Rajesh Kumar Srivastava confirmed that authorities facilitated his return home as per his wish.
Deportation and Travel History
Robi was taken to Chakeri Airport under police escort and was not allowed to leave the airport premises before boarding his flight to Dhaka. His travel history has raised questions, especially since he arrived in India on a medical visa intended for treatment but attended cricket matches instead.
According to officials, Robi had initially arrived in India on September 18 for medical treatment but chose to watch the cricket series instead of focusing solely on his health. He had previously visited Chennai for the first Test match before heading to Kanpur.
Medical Evaluation and Official Statements
Upon being admitted to the hospital, Robi was treated for dehydration and exhaustion rather than injuries from an alleged assault. Police officials stated that he was found gasping for breath when approached by a constable.
“He became unconscious before we could speak to him,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Harish Chander.
Despite initial claims of being assaulted, police investigations, including CCTV footage reviews, indicated that Robi’s health issues stemmed from heat exhaustion rather than any physical confrontation.
