He said, “ Obviously, the pitches in Australia are slightly different. But if you take your mentality, and if you take that sort of strength that you have, you’re going to play good cricket in any conditions. I expect to see him do well.”
Since his Test debut in the West Indies in July 2023, Jaiswal has made a remarkable impression as India’s opener, scoring 1,217 runs at an impressive average of 64.05 over 11 matches. While many players have struggled during their initial tours to Australia, Lara is confident that Jaiswal can rise to the challenge if he maintains a positive and focused mindset throughout the series.
He further said, “ I think the adjustment is upstairs. The adjustment is the ability to back your talent in whatever conditions. I say this with a pinch of salt, because conditions in India have changed. “
He added, “With the IPL, you’ve got international players coming – and you’re feeding your players a different level of competition, which is great. So I don’t think there’s much that he (Jaiswal) has to do technically. I just think mentally [he has to adjust]: travelling away from home, [and] playing against Australia; Australia, on their shores, are a different beast.”

In 2023, Jaiswal has shone brightly in India’s home Test matches, accumulating 901 runs in just seven games, consistently achieving at least one fifty in each outing. This remarkable performance has caught the eye of Lara, who highlighted both Jaiswal and Abhishek Sharma—who debuted in T20I earlier this year—as the most promising Indian batters on the scene today.
He added, “ First of all, they’re left-handers. They’re very young, and they play the game in a style [that is] very attacking, very stylish. It’s great to see them go from strength to strength.”
At 24, Abhishek featured in 11 matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad during the 2023 IPL season, where Lara served as head coach. His outstanding performance in the 2024 campaign earned him a spot in the Indian T20I setup following the T20 World Cup victory. Currently, he is part of the Indian squad competing against Bangladesh in a T20I series, while Jaiswal has been rested in preparation for the upcoming three-match Test series against New Zealand starting on October 16.
Following the T20I series, India will transition to Test cricket during their tour of Australia, kicking off with the first Test in Perth on November 22.
