South African fast bowling legend Dale Steyn has confirmed that he will not be returning to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) as their bowling coach for the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Steyn announced his departure through a post on X, expressing gratitude for his time with the franchise.
Steyn, who had been with SRH for a few years, mentioned that while he won’t be part of the IPL 2025 campaign, he will continue working with Sunrisers Eastern Cape, the SRH-affiliated team in South Africa’s SA20 competition. Under his guidance, the Sunrisers Eastern Cape team has won back-to-back titles in the SA20 league, and Steyn is eager to help them achieve a third consecutive title.

In his post, Steyn wrote, “A big thank you to Sunrisers Hyderabad for my few years with them as bowling coach at the IPL, unfortunately, I won’t be returning for IPL 2025. However, I will continue to work with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 here in South Africa. Two-time winners here in SA20, let’s try to make it THREE in a row.”
Steyn was notably absent from SRH’s IPL campaign last season, as he had made himself unavailable for the 2024 tournament. During that time, former New Zealand pacer James Franklin stepped in as SRH’s bowling coach.
Steyn’s departure adds a new layer of intrigue to Sunrisers Hyderabad’s preparations ahead of the IPL 2025 auction, as the team will now have to search for a new bowling coach to fill the void left by the iconic fast bowler.
