“Disappointing night” New Zealand Captain Sophie Devine Reflects on Tough Loss against Australia Women

The ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup is spreading excitement all over. The 10th match of the tournament witnessed a clash between Australia Women and New Zealand Women. The end was not desired for the New Zealand side as they faced a big 60-run defeat. After facing the setback, New Zealand captain Sophie Devine reflected on the defeat.

Sophie Devine on the Defeat:

With the winning streak behind them, Australia Women and New Zealand Women faced each other in the 10th match of the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. While bowling in the first innings, the New Zealand Women’s bowlers showcased excellence. Amelia Kerr secured 4 wickets just by conceding 26 runs. Brooke Haliday and Rosemary Mair secured 2 wickets each.

While chasing the target, their batting lineup was shattered. They lost wickets consecutively and failed to make an impactful partnership. Suzie Bates played a knock of 20 runs in 27 balls. After showcasing excellence with the ball, Amelia Kerr scored 29 runs. Lea Tahuhu added 11 runs. But those efforts fell short and they faced a big defeat of 60 runs.

While reflecting on the defeat, the New Zealand Women’s captain Sophie Devine said, “We needed to get a good start, we let the run-rate creep up, and in games like that the run-rate can accelerate so quickly. Disappointing night, but as we said after the first game we won’t get too high when we win or too low when we lose. The wicket played a little better than what we thought it would, we knew what Australia would bring. We will take some key learnings from this.”

Rectifying the Mistakes:

In the match, the New Zealand batters should have utilized the conditions. Before this game, they registered a thrilling win against India with domination. But in this match, they failed to execute the plans. As they are set to face Sri Lanka Women in their next match, they are aiming to rectify their mistakes.

While talking about this, she said, “We will reflect and refocus before our next game against Sri Lanka. With the ball we strayed a bit too far from the stumps, that’s where we were good against India where we kept them in play. In the field we were sloppy and with the bat we need to be more courageous and that’s what we need to do to win games in this World Cup.”

Aiming to Bounce Back Stronger:

As the tournament develops, the competition becomes more intense. All teams have two more games before the upcoming stage. After facing the defeat, New Zealand Women is standing in the third position of group A. With one win and one defeat, they are standing with a run rate of – 0.050. Before qualifying for the semifinals, they need to focus on this area.

While talking about this, she said, “It was always a discussion point, we want to win the game obviously, there was a thought process about the run-rate but we weren’t good enough tonight. We have got two games to go and we have to make sure that we keep ourselves in a good position to qualify for the semi-finals.”

Later she added, “Taking it one game at a time, not focussing too far ahead. First we need to win our next game which is against Sri Lanka, that is our most important game, they bring a different challenge with Chamari who is a big threat.”
