Former England captain Michael Vaughan has expressed concern over the absence of fast bowler Mark Wood in England’s upcoming two Tests against Sri Lanka. Vaughan emphasized that while Ben Stokes’ absence is significant, Wood’s absence could be even more detrimental to England’s chances in the series.

Vaughan highlighted that Wood’s ability to consistently bowl at speeds of 95 to 97 miles per hour sets him apart from other players. He mentioned that even Jofra Archer, another fast bowler in the squad, does not consistently reach the same speeds as Wood. According to Vaughan, this makes Wood the most important member of the England team at the moment.

Vaughan also pointed out that Wood’s absence was felt on the fourth day of the Test against Sri Lanka, where the pitch conditions were flat and there was little lateral movement. England’s bowling attack struggled without Wood’s pace, which could have made a difference in exploiting the pitch’s conditions.
“We saw it this morning when the pitch was flat, there wasn’t a great deal there for the spin, there was no lateral movement, they were crying out for Mark Wood. He is not going to play at Lords. He might not be seen again this summer,” Vaughan added.
The possibility of Wood not playing for the remainder of the summer is a significant concern for England. With his injury status uncertain, England may have to rely on their other bowlers to fill the void left by Wood’s absence.
