Former pacer Shabbir Ahmed has resigned from his role as regional coach at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), citing serious concerns about the state of grassroots cricket in the country. His decision stems from the troubling conditions he witnessed, which he believes are hindering the development of young talent. Ahmed, once a key figure in Pakistan’s bowling attack, expressed disappointment over the lack of proper facilities and support at the foundational level, prompting him to step down in hopes of sparking much-needed reforms in the cricketing infrastructure.

In his resignation letter, Shabbir Ahmed, former head coach of the Dera Ghazi Khan region, voiced his frustration over the widespread political interference, favoritism, and nepotism in regional and district cricket affairs. He found these issues intolerable, impacting the integrity of the sport at the grassroots level. Unable to accept such conditions, Shabbir decided to step down from his position, hoping his decision might shed light on the need for reform in cricket management at these levels.

He stated, “ How can Pakistan cricket improve when there is no merit in selection of players at regional level and there is so much interference and nepotism and favouritism by cricket officials.”

Shabbir Ahmed took on the role of head coach in Dera Ghazi Khan with the vision of fostering cricket talent at the district and regional levels. His primary objective was to mentor young players and support the sport’s development in the area. A player who works hard throughout the year and is a good talent is overlooked in the final selection to pick a player who use political and other connections to get in. Even if coaches who are sincere want to do something they are helpless in the existing system.”
