In a fiery response to critics, former Indian World Cup winner and current head coach Gautam Gambhir addressed the backlash following India’s 0-3 Test series loss to New Zealand. Known for his determined approach, Gambhir dismissed the noise surrounding his coaching performance, declaring that social media opinions have little impact on his life or decisions.
The 0-3 whitewash against New Zealand has raised questions about Gambhir’s capabilities as a coach, particularly in the longer formats. However, as he prepares for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, Gambhir remains focused on strategy and growth.
Social Media and Coaching Journey
When asked about the criticism and pressure tied to his coaching role, Gambhir asserted that social media’s influence does not affect his approach or mindset.
“What difference does social media make in my life, or anyone’s life? When I took up this job, I always knew that it was going to be a highly difficult job and a highly prestigious job as well. I don’t think as if I’m feeling the heat because my job is to be absolutely honest,” exclaimed Gambhir.

“There are some incredibly tough people in that dressing room who have achieved some great things for the country and will continue to achieve some great things for the country. So it’s an absolute honour to be coaching them and coaching India.”
Acknowledging the challenges, he praised the Indian team’s dedication, mentioning that it’s an honor to coach players who have achieved great things for the country.
While Gambhir has succeeded in leading India to an unbeaten streak in T20Is, his record in Tests and ODIs shows room for improvement, with only a 40% win rate in Tests and no victories in ODIs so far.
Despite these setbacks, Gambhir emphasised that his focus remains on honest work and helping the team build on their achievements.
Road Ahead: Border-Gavaskar Trophy
India’s forthcoming Border-Gavaskar series in Australia is set to test Gambhir’s strategies and adaptability in red-ball cricket.
The series is expected to be a high-stakes matchup, and Gambhir is optimistic about the Indian side’s potential to bounce back from recent losses.
He asserted that the team is dedicated to building strength and momentum, aiming to secure victory in Australia.
With the possibility of different coaches being appointed for white- and red-ball formats if the Border-Gavaskar series does not go in India’s favour, Gambhir’s tenure is at a critical juncture.
However, he is determined to help India improve, taking the lessons from past losses into this new challenge.
