Atkinson became the first bowler in 94 years of test cricket at the venue to achieve maiden Test hat-trick. His brilliant effort also made him the 14th England bowler to achieve this milestone. He is the fourth bowler to do so against New Zealand. He joined Moeen Ali and Stuart board from England to make this exceptional claim.
Atkinson made history on the 35th over. Nathan Smith fell after scoring 14 runs and bowled by a low delivery. On the very next ball, Matt Henry departed for a golden duck. At gully, Ben Duckett got caught sharply. And finally, Tim Southee, the last Kiwi batter, was trapped LBW on review and the rest is history.
