Harmanpreet Kaur Emphasizes Team Unity Ahead of Women’s Asia Cup Opener Against Pakistan

India’s Women’s Cricket Team, led by skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, is set to kick off their Women’s Asia Cup campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on Friday in Dambulla. As the defending champions, India aims to secure a record-extending eighth Asia Cup title, and Kaur believes that a harmonious team environment is key to their success.

Creating a Positive Team Atmosphere

In an interview with Star Sports, Harmanpreet Kaur emphasized the importance of maintaining a good atmosphere within the team. She believes that a comfortable and open environment, where players can share their feelings and support each other, enhances on-field performance.

“I feel like there should be such an atmosphere in the team that everyone enjoys each other’s company and can share their feelings with each other. And when the atmosphere is like that, the team’s performance becomes good as well,” said Kaur.

Kaur, as a leader, strives to ensure that her teammates feel like they are playing alongside friends, which she believes significantly boosts morale and performance. “So, my motive as a leader is that all of us feel comfortable with each other. And when you do not enjoy it, you feel like you have to go and play with players who you are not comfortable with. But if you feel like you are going to play with your friends and make the team win, that feeling is different.”

Building on Recent Success

India enters the Women’s Asia Cup with strong momentum, having achieved notable victories in recent series. In June-July, the team triumphed over South Africa with a 3-0 win in the ODI series and secured a draw in the three-match T20I series, with one game washed out due to rain. This followed a successful tour of Bangladesh in April-May, where India dominated with a 5-0 sweep in T20Is.

Earlier in the year, India hosted Australia for a one-off Test, three ODIs, and three T20Is. While India won the Test match, they faced setbacks in the ODI series (0-3) and T20I series (1-2). These matches have been crucial in preparing the team for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, scheduled from October 3-20 in Bangladesh.

Looking Ahead to the Asia Cup and Beyond

As India prepares to face Pakistan in their Asia Cup opener, the team is focused on continuing their winning streak and building a strong foundation for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. The Asia Cup serves as a critical platform for the team to fine-tune their strategies and strengthen their performance.

Kaur’s leadership, centred on fostering a supportive and enjoyable team environment, is expected to play a significant role in India’s quest for their first major ICC women’s trophy. “We want an atmosphere where everyone is happy, supporting each other and the results are good as well. So I think as a leader that is my motive that everyone talks well to each other, enjoy each other’s company and whenever there are hard times, they support each other,” she added.
