The IPL Auction 2018 turned out to be a fruitful event for Royal Challengers Bangalore. The franchise added quite a few talented blokes from around the world but somehow, they could not buy the top prodigies available from the auction.
Having retained Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Sarfaraz Khan, RCB had INR 47 crores remaining in the purse. Kiwi’s former skipper Brendon McCullum was the first to join the RCB unit for a price of INR 3.6 crores. Even though he is not playing international cricket anymore yet he is active in various franchise T20 leagues and can be a useful prospect for RCB at the top of the order.
The franchise perhaps went over the top in picking the English all-rounder Chris Woakes as they spent INR 7.4 crores for him. He didn’t have a great run in the last edition and doesn’t have a great record in the shortest format of the game either.
Two more all-rounders were slotted in the form of Colin de Grandhomme and Moeen Ali. South Africa’s wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock was the next addition to the squad for INR 2.8 crores. India’s pacer Umesh Yadav also bagged a good price of INR 4.2 crores to join the RCB setup.
All eyes were on the arrival of the leggie Yuzvendra Chahal as the franchise was expected to use the RTM card for him. They indeed used the RTM for him and matched Delhi Daredevils’ bid of INR 6 crores. At the end of day 1, there were as many as 4 uncapped players bought to strengthen the squad.
On day 2, RCB bought the young sensation Washington Sundar for INR 3.2 crores. They added to the pace battery with Australia’s Nathan Coulter-Nile and India’s Mohammed Siraj. Parthiv Patel and Tim Southee, who went unsold on day 1, were picked up by RCB.
