Kane Williamson will miss the second Test against India due to a groin strain. New Zealand head coach Gary Stead confirmed Williamson’s rehabilitation is progressing, but he’s not fit for a return yet.
Kane Williamson Ruled Out of Second Test Against India
“Kane Williamson will not be available for the BLACKCAPS second Test match against India, as he continues his rehabilitation from a groin strain,” said NZC in a statement.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has been ruled out of the second Test against India, which starts on October 24 in Pune, due to a groin injury.
Williamson, who missed the first Test in Bengaluru, will remain in New Zealand to continue his recovery, according to a statement from New Zealand Cricket (NZC) on Tuesday.
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead expressed optimism about Williamson’s recovery but confirmed that the star batter is not yet fully fit to return to Test cricket.
“We’re monitoring Kane and he’s tracking in the right direction, but isn’t yet 100% fit,” said Stead.
Williamson’s participation for the third and final Test remains unclear but Stead sounded hopeful.
“We’re hopeful to see further improvement over the coming days and have him available for the third Test. We’ll give him as much time as possible to get himself ready, but certainly continue to take a cautious approach,” he said.
New Zealand’s Dominance Without Williamson
Despite the absence of their key player, New Zealand’s performance in the series has been stellar.
The Tom Latham-led side secured a historic victory in the first Test, defeating India by eight wickets in Bengaluru.
This was New Zealand’s first win on Indian soil in 36 years. The foundation of this victory was laid by the impressive bowling performances of Matt Henry and Will O’Rourke, who dismantled India for just 46 runs in the first innings, India’s lowest home total.
Rachin Ravindra also shone with his maiden Test century, helping New Zealand build a commanding lead in the first innings.
India’s attempts at a comeback, led by remarkable knocks from Sarfaraz Khan (150), Rishabh Pant (99), and Virat Kohli (70), were not enough to overturn New Zealand’s advantage.
Hopes for Williamson’s Return in the Final Test
While Kane Williamson’s absence has not weakened New Zealand so far, his return for the third and final Test remains a focal point.
“We will give Kane as much time as possible to get ready,” Stead added, emphasising the team’s cautious approach.
Fans and the team alike will be hopeful that Williamson can make his return in time to play a crucial role in what could be a historic series win for New Zealand in India.
