New Zealand Cricket has named Mitchell Santner as the new white-ball captain. He has succeeded the one of most praised leaders, Kane Williamson as he stepped down after the T20 World Cup this year. Santner is an experienced leader and now he will officially lead the team in both ODIs and T20s. The series against Sri Lanka will begin soon in December.

The 32-year-old left-arm spinner has also captained New Zealand in 24 T20I and four ODIs on an interim basis. Now he will take over on the full-time role, his leadership will be closely monitored during a crucial phase of New Zealand‘s limited-overs cricket.

Reason Behind Santner’s Appointment As A Captain
New Zealand’s head coach Gary Stead explained that this decision was made to avoid workload on Test captain Tom Latham.
Stead praised Santner’s calm and composed leadership and said “Mitch leads by example, has respect in the changing room, and has shown his capabilities as a stand-in captain.”
Key Challenges And Upcoming Matches
Santner’s first major challenge as captain will be the Sri Lanka series. New Zealand wants to build momentum in the team ahead of the 2025 Champions Trophy.
