In a spectacular display of batting, Nicholas Pooran cemented his status as one of the finest T20 batters in the modern era with a blazing century for the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) against the Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) in the 2024 Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Pooran’s century, which came off just 57 balls, was the highlight of TKR’s commanding 74-run victory in Match 30 of the tournament, held at Guyana on September 30, 2024.
Pooran’s Sensational Knock
Coming in to bat after an early dismissal of Shaqkere Parris in the first over, Pooran immediately set the tone with his aggressive stroke play. He scored three boundaries within his first six balls, accelerating TKR’s innings right from the powerplay. By the end of the powerplay, Pooran had brought up his half-century in just 22 balls, courtesy of 13 boundaries inside the first six overs.
Even as fielding restrictions lifted, Pooran showed no signs of slowing down. He took on experienced leg-spinner Imran Tahir, smashing consecutive sixes in the seventh over. His belligerent partnership with England’s Jason Roy (153 runs) laid a strong foundation for TKR, with Pooran leading the charge while Roy played a supporting role, contributing 34 runs.
Pooran reached his third CPL century with a single off Dwaine Pretorius in the 14th over. His explosive knock of 101 runs off 59 balls was laced with nine boundaries and eight towering sixes, firmly putting TKR in control of the match. His innings finally ended in the 18th over, but by then, TKR had already crossed the 200-run mark.
TKR Post 211/5 and Seal Dominant Victory
Riding on Pooran’s century and contributions from other batters, TKR posted an imposing total of 211-5 in their allotted 20 overs. GAW found themselves struggling against the disciplined bowling attack of TKR and were bundled out for 137 in 18.5 overs. With this dominant performance, TKR secured their third win in four matches, propelling them to 14 points and confirming their spot in the CPL 2024 playoffs.
Pooran Reflects on His Innings
Reflecting on his magnificent century, Pooran remarked during the post-match presentation: “It’s not about being responsible or being fearless, I have worked on my execution. I wanted to dig deep, look for my matchups, and execute my plans. It’s a good one, getting two 90s already in the competition this year. This is one of my best 100s in the CPL, and any hundred is good, especially in crunch conditions when it’s time for us to stand up.”
Pooran’s form has been impressive throughout 2024, having delivered standout performances in multiple T20 leagues. After being a crucial part of MI Emirates’ title-winning campaign in the 2024 International League T20, he enjoyed a strong run in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Lucknow Super Giants. Although his stint with MI New York in the 2024 Major League Cricket (MLC) was underwhelming, Pooran has bounced back in the CPL and is currently the second-highest run-scorer of the tournament, only behind Quinton de Kock.
Next Match for TKR
With momentum on their side, the Trinbago Knight Riders will face the Barbados Royals in their final league stage fixture on October 2, 2024, in a crucial encounter ahead of the CPL playoffs.
Nicholas Pooran’s scintillating form will undoubtedly be pivotal as TKR aim to secure the CPL 2024 title. His ability to perform under pressure in high-stakes games continues to make him one of the most valuable assets in T20 cricket.
