The Pakistan Super League (PSL) has not only become a premier franchise league in cricket but also a source of joy and distraction for many amidst the country’s challenging political environment. Shaheen Afridi, the talented fast bowler, expressed his hopes for the PSL to bring happiness to fans during these tough times.
“PSL and cricket are something that makes people happy. Elections just got over, so I’m hopeful the crowds turn up and support cricket,” Afridi shared with ESPNcricinfo.
Pakistan has been facing political tensions, especially with former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s recent release on bail after being arrested. The PSL, being a major cricketing event in the country, has offered a welcome escape for fans grappling with various challenges, including basic needs.
Afridi also highlighted his growth as a captain, noting that the role has taught him valuable lessons in man-management and prioritizing the team over personal performance.
“When I wasn’t captain, I didn’t know a lot of things. Some of them are so basic I don’t even want to tell you about them. When you’re a bowler, you only focus on yourself and your bowling,” Afridi reflected on his evolution.
Leading Lahore Qalandars to consecutive titles, Afridi emphasized the importance of local players in the PSL, crediting their success to the development programs that have unearthed talented individuals from various regions.
“When local players play in a team, that side does very well, I think that’s the biggest secret. The local players who were given opportunities performed and won matches for Pakistan, and that was a huge deal for us,” Afridi praised the impact of local talent.
Amidst challenges and crises, Afridi’s sentiments reflect the unifying power of cricket, offering hope and a sense of normalcy to fans in Pakistan.
