Suresh Raina on Rishabh Pant: "The X Factor for Team India"

Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina has emphasized the importance of Rishabh Pant in India’s ODI lineup ahead of the series against England and the Champions Trophy. Speaking on Star Sports, Raina called Pant the “X factor” for India but stressed the need for him to bat with greater responsibility.

“He has improved a lot on his wicket-keeping. Rishabh Pant needs to play with more responsibility because this is a 50-over tournament,” Raina said.

Rishabh Pant: A Game-Changer Under Pressure

Pant’s record in ODIs has been inconsistent. In 31 matches, he has scored 871 runs at an average of 33.5. However, his ability to perform under pressure cannot be overlooked. Pant’s unbeaten 125 against England in 2022, where he single-handedly chased down 260, showcased his potential to turn games in India’s favor.

Raina pointed out that Pant can be pivotal in India’s middle order. “If Rishabh goes on to play 40-50 deliveries, he can finish off the game. He has to tell himself that if I play fifty deliveries, I can score 80-100 runs,” Raina said.

Pant’s Role Amidst Competition

The competition for the wicketkeeping spot in India’s ODI squad remains stiff, with KL Rahul also in contention. Despite Pant’s prolonged absence from regular ODI cricket, the selectors have included him as the second keeper in the Champions Trophy squad. This decision highlights the faith in Pant’s ability to deliver on big occasions.

India’s Preparation for the England Series

India will play three ODIs against England, followed by five T20Is, offering Pant a chance to prove his mettle. Raina believes this series could define Pant’s role in the team. “This will be a good opportunity for Rishabh Pant. He can bat at the fourth position or even before Hardik. It depends on how the team plans the lineup,” Raina added.

Raina also hinted that the inclusion of Yashasvi Jaiswal in the top order could influence Pant’s role. However, he maintained that Pant’s ability to adapt and spend time at the crease would be critical for India’s success.

Eyes on the Champions Trophy

India’s squad for the Champions Trophy includes experienced players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja. Raina expressed optimism that the trio could recreate their 2013 magic, but he insisted that Pant’s contributions could make a significant difference.

“He has that talent and ability. If he makes a mistake, it’s going to cost a lot,” Raina concluded.
