Early Life
Kedar Jadhav was born on 26 March 1985 in Pune, Maharashtra, into a middle-class family with roots in Jadhavwadi, Solapur district. His father, Mahadev Jadhav, worked as a clerk at the Maharashtra State Electricity Board, and his mother was a homemaker. As the youngest of four siblings, Jadhav developed a love for cricket from an early age.
Growing up in Kothrud, Pune, Jadhav played cricket at the PYC Hindu Gymkhana, one of Pune’s most well-known cricket clubs. Initially, he played tennis ball cricket tournaments before making his way into the Maharashtra U-19 team in 2004. His ability to dominate bowling attacks, even at the junior level, caught the attention of domestic selectors.
Despite lacking a strong cricketing background, Jadhav’s sheer determination, hunger for success, and aggressive stroke play helped him rise through the ranks. His fearless approach and ability to handle pressure would later become defining traits of his professional career.
Domestic Career
Kedar Jadhav made his first-class debut for Maharashtra in 2007, but it was his 2012 Ranji Trophy season that established him as one of India’s most promising middle-order batsmen.
Breakthrough in Domestic Cricket
In 2012, he scored a triple century (327 runs) against Uttar Pradesh, becoming the second-highest individual scorer for Maharashtra in
Ranji Trophy history. This innings announced his arrival in Indian domestic cricket as a batting powerhouse.
The 2013–14 Ranji Trophy season was his most successful one, as he amassed 1,223 runs, including six centuries, making him the fourth-highest run-getter in the tournament’s history. His performances led Maharashtra to the Ranji Trophy final for the first time since 1992-93, proving his ability to play match-winning knocks under pressure.
India A and Deodhar Trophy Performances
Jadhav’s consistency earned him a place in India A and the West Zone team. His performances in List A and Deodhar Trophy tournaments further strengthened his credentials as a reliable middle-order batsman.
In October 2019, Jadhav was named in India B’s squad for the 2019–20 Deodhar Trophy, continuing his domestic dominance.
His impressive domestic career made him a regular feature in IPL franchises and paved the way for his eventual selection in the Indian national team.
International Career
Kedar Jadhav made his ODI debut on 16 November 2014 against Sri Lanka but had a slow start to his international career. However, he made an impact when he scored his maiden ODI century (105) against Zimbabwe in 2015*, showcasing his ability as a finisher.
His breakout moment came in January 2017, when he scored a match-winning 120 off 76 balls against England. He formed a 200-run partnership with Virat Kohli, helping India chase down 351 runs. He followed it up with 90 runs in the third ODI, earning him the Player of the Series award.
Jadhav was also part of India’s squad for the 2017 Champions Trophy and the 2019 World Cup, playing a crucial role in the middle order. His off-spin bowling became a surprise weapon, often breaking partnerships at key moments.
In the 2018 Asia Cup Final, Jadhav’s calm unbeaten 23 runs helped India clinch the trophy in a tense chase against Bangladesh. His ability to handle pressure made him a valuable asset for the Indian team.
Despite his contributions, Jadhav was dropped from the national squad in 2020. He officially retired from all forms of cricket on 3 June 2024.
