Suryakumar Yadav, the captain of India’s T20I cricket team, remains optimistic about returning to the Test format despite having played only one match so far. He made his Test debut against Australia in early 2023 but has since focused on domestic cricket to enhance his chances of rejoining the Test squad.
Suryakumar Yadav Optimistic About Test Comeback
Ahead of India’s first T20I against South Africa in Durban, Suryakumar emphasized his dedication to playing as much domestic cricket as possible. “When the time comes, I will make a Test comeback,” he stated.
“I am playing all the domestic tournaments, be it red-ball or white-ball. I don’t miss any games. If that [Test comeback] has to happen, it will happen.” His commitment is evident as he participated in a Ranji Trophy match for Mumbai last month and played for India B in the Duleep Trophy.
Supporting Rohit Sharma
Suryakumar also expressed his support for Rohit Sharma, India’s Test and ODI captain, who has faced criticism following a 3-0 home series loss to New Zealand. “In sports, winning and losing are common. Everyone works hard, everyone wants to win,” he remarked. “For me, the most important thing in life is the balance. Whether he’s [Rohit] doing well or not, his character does not change. That is one quality which I feel a sportsman should always have.”
As Suryakumar steps into his role as T20I captain, he acknowledges the influence Rohit has had on his leadership style. “I know how he [Rohit] treats the players, what he wants from them,” Suryakumar shared.
“So that route I have also taken because he’s been very successful recently.” He admires Rohit’s calm demeanor under pressure and aims to replicate that in his own captaincy.
“Most importantly, from a leader you expect how much time he is spending with you to have that comfort,” Suryakumar added. “I try to replicate that. When I am not on the ground, I try and spend time with my teammates, have a meal with them, travel together.” He believes these small gestures help earn respect and foster teamwork.
Suryakumar Yadav’ Early Success as Captain
Under Suryakumar’s leadership, India has seen impressive results in T20Is, winning 11 out of 13 matches since he took over following Rohit’s retirement from the format after India’s T20 World Cup victory in June 2024. His experience leading India in South Africa last year also adds to his confidence.
“My captaincy style is completely different from my aggressive batting style,” he explained. “I try to give my players plenty of freedom and clarity.” He emphasizes understanding players’ minds and providing them with comfort on the field.
Managing Young Talent
The current T20I squad against South Africa features several young players, including three uncapped talents: Vijaykumar Vyshak, Ramandeep Singh, and Yash Dayal. Suryakumar finds managing these youngsters easy due to their existing experience in state teams and IPL franchises.
“They have made my job very easy if you’ve seen the last two or three series,” he said about the younger players. “I have told them to keep the needs of the team in front, and whatever calls they take, we are here to back them.”
Despite concerns about playing on bouncy pitches in South Africa, Suryakumar remains unfazed. “We do play on good bouncy pitches back home in India also,” he noted confidently. “There are quite a few, so it’s nothing new for us.” He believes that understanding local conditions will aid their performance.
