On July 14, 2024, Angel Di Maria achieved a significant milestone by equaling Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for the most trophies won in football history. This accomplishment came as a result of Argentina’s victory in the 2024 Copa America, where Di Maria played a key role in securing the title.
The Copa America win marks Di Maria’s 35th career trophy, putting him on par with Cristiano Ronaldo. Di Maria’s illustrious career has seen him collect a diverse array of honors, including:
Di Maria’s trophies have largely been earned during his time with Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, and Benfica. However, his stints with Manchester United, Juventus, and Rosario Central did not yield any major silverware.
Currently, Lionel Messi holds the record for the most trophies won by a footballer, with 45 titles. While Di Maria’s recent achievement brings him closer to this record, he remains short of Messi’s impressive tally.
In a recent interview with Marca, Di Maria revealed his dream team of players he has played alongside but notably left Cristiano Ronaldo out of the lineup. Reflecting on his selection process, Di Maria stated:
“I had the opportunity to play with so many and have that privilege that sometimes if they don’t ask me a question like that I don’t start thinking about who I played with and the truth is that it is crazy if I have to put myself together. I could easily put together two all-star teams.”
Cristiano Ronaldo was not included, nor was a natural right-back chosen for the team.
As Di Maria looks back on his career, he reflects on his achievements and the significance of this latest milestone. His contributions to both club and country have solidified his place among football’s greats, and his recent Copa America victory further cements his legacy.
