Prithvi Shaw has a special connection with Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Ahead of its 50th-anniversary celebrations on January 19, the young cricketer shared a heartfelt memory of watching India’s iconic 2011 World Cup Final with his close friend, Arjun Tendulkar.
Prithvi Shaw grew up playing Cricket in Mumbai. He vividly remembers his first visit to the Wankhede Stadium. He was just 11 years old when India clinched the World Cup against Sri Lanka in 2011. Sitting beside Arjun Tendulkar, son of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, Shaw watched history unfold.
“My first memory, and it’ll stay with me forever, was watching the 2011 World Cup Final here. I was just 11. Arjun Tendulkar and I sat together and saw India lift the trophy. What an unforgettable experience,” Shaw shared.
The Mumbai Cricket Association will celebrate 50 Years of the Wankhede Stadium on 19th January. This event will honor some of the finest Mumbai Cricketers. The list includes Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar and Rohit Sharma’s names. Ravi Shastri, Suryakumar Yadav and Ajinkya Rahane will also be present. Women’s cricket icons Diana Edulji and Arundhati Ghosh are among those being recognized.
The celebrations will bring together Mumbai’s finest domestic and international players, past and present. Fans have been invited to join in and celebrate the rich legacy of one of India’s most historic cricket stadiums.
While Shaw’s memories of Wankhede are full of joy, his recent form has been a concern. He was dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad due to disciplinary issues and poor performances. Shaw also went unsold in the 2025 IPL auction, a stark contrast to his earlier success.
Despite setbacks, Shaw remains optimistic. Reflecting on Wankhede’s milestone, he encouraged fans to be part of the celebrations. “As kids, we all dreamed of playing at Wankhede. This 50th anniversary is for everyone in Mumbai. Let’s celebrate together,” he said.
