Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the 14-year-old prodigy, made an explosive debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. He left both Indian and international cricket fans in awe. His blistering knock for Rajasthan Royals against Lucknow Super Giants at Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Stadium has taken the cricket world by storm. His remarkable performance drawing particular attention across the border in Pakistan.
Suryavanshi was drafted into Rajasthan Royals for ₹1.1 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction. He made an immediate impact on his IPL debut, stepping in for the injured Sanju Samson. The young batter came to the crease with the Royals at 38/1, and in the company of Yashasvi Jaiswal, provided a blistering start to their innings. Suryavanshi wasted no time, launching into the attack right from the first ball. He dispatched Shardul Thakur’s full-length delivery over the ropes for a stunning six, setting the tone for a fearless innings.
Although Rajasthan Royals couldn’t get over the line, losing the match to Lucknow Super Giants, Suryavanshi’s whirlwind 34 runs off 20 balls became the talk of the town. His fearless approach and remarkable stroke play made headlines, with cricketing greats from India showering praise on the teenager for his audacity and talent. However, his performance didn’t just capture the imagination of Indian fans, but it also made waves in Pakistan, where former cricketer Basit Ali couldn’t hold back his admiration for the young star.
On his YouTube channel, Basit Ali praised Suryavanshi’s confidence, recalling how some Pakistani critics might have reacted differently had the teen failed in his bold approach. “The 14-year-old kid, Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The way he smashed that first ball for six, it’s a huge deal. Imagine what would have happened had he gotten out trying to hit the first ball for six? What would people have said? In Pakistan, people would have said, throw him out. But this is how confidence is given, which later pays off,” Basit remarked.
The former cricketer, known for his straightforward views, went on to highlight how the Indian cricket system encourages young talent to express themselves without fear of failure. He pointed out the success of players like Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill, who thrived once given the freedom to play their natural game.
Suryavanshi had previously made waves with his performances for India U-19. The batter was already in the spotlight long before his IPL debut. He impressed during the U-19 Asia Cup, where he played a pivotal role in India’s journey to the final, scoring 176 runs at an average of 44. His remarkable triple-century in the Bihar’s Randhir Verma U-19 Tournament also caught the eye of scouts and selectors alike.
In IPL 2025, Suryavanshi joins a growing list of young players who are making their mark in the tournament. This has elevated the excitement around the future of Indian cricket. The IPL 2025 season, which has already seen some fantastic performances from emerging players, is expected to showcase more prodigies like Suryavanshi who are ready to take on the big stage.
While the IPL continues to enjoy its dominance as the world’s premier T20 league, comparisons with Pakistan’s PSL are inevitable. However, Basit Ali made it clear that for him, the IPL is the number one T20 league in the world, citing the immense talent pool available in India. “The class of IPL – when I call it No. 1, my Pakistan brothers feel bad. But all they do is waste their hands and time. Look at the immense pool of talent, this season alone. Nehal Wadhera, Priyansh Arya, Abdul Samad, Ashwani Kumar. I want to see Mayank Yadav in particular. Im eagerly waiting for him to be match fit. I really want to see his bowling,” Basit added.
