In a World Cup debut to remember, Netherlands’ rising star, Bas de Leede, not only showcased his exceptional cricketing skills but also left a lasting impression with an iconic wink that captivated cricket fans worldwide. De Leede’s extraordinary debut took center stage during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023’s second game against Pakistan.
While Bas de Leede’s all-round performance was commendable, it was a single moment that stole the spotlight. During the match, de Leede executed a breathtaking shot—a powerful pull for a six off Pakistan’s Haris Rauf in the 29th over. What made this moment truly memorable was the wink he directed at the bowler as the ball soared over the boundary. The wink, captured by cameras and shared on social media, instantly became a sensation and symbolised the spirit of the World Cup.
Beyond the iconic wink, de Leede delivered a stellar performance with the ball, showcasing his bowling prowess by claiming four crucial wickets. His figures of 4/62 in nine overs were instrumental in restricting Pakistan to a total of 286 runs as they were bowled out in the 49th over.
In addition to his charismatic wink, de Leede stood out with the bat. He top-scored for Netherlands, amassing a well-crafted 67 runs off 68 deliveries, including six boundaries and two magnificent sixes. His innings showcased his versatility and composure at the crease.
With his remarkable all-round performance and the iconic wink, Bas de Leede etched his name into the annals of cricket history. He became only the third player to achieve the unique feat of scoring a fifty and securing a four-wicket haul on their World Cup debut. Previously, Zimbabwean cricketers Duncan Fletcher (1983) and Neil Johnson (1999) had accomplished a similar feat.
Despite Bas de Leede’s exceptional performance, Netherlands fell short in their pursuit of Pakistan’s target. Apart from de Leede and Vikramjit Singh, no other batter managed to surpass the 30-run mark. Netherlands eventually concluded their innings at 205, suffering an 81-run defeat.
In their upcoming fixture, Netherlands is scheduled to face New Zealand on October 09, while Pakistan is set to take on Sri Lanka on October 10. Bas de Leede’s memorable debut, marked by the iconic wink, has certainly made him a player to watch in the remainder of the tournament.
