Wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik expressed his belief that off-spinning all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin will be included in India’s squad for the 2023 World Cup. Karthik, who has played alongside Ashwin in the Indian team, shared his thoughts on social media.
Ashwin’s potential inclusion in the World Cup squad has been a topic of discussion, especially due to Axar Patel’s quadriceps strain. The deadline for teams to make changes to their provisional squads for the 2023 World Cup is September 28, with further replacements requiring approval from the ICC’s technical committee.
Karthik mentioned that he couldn’t specify how Ashwin would make it into the squad but expressed a hunch about it.
Ashwin had featured in India’s squad for the three-match ODI series against Australia, where he played the first two matches. He performed impressively, taking crucial wickets and strengthening his case for inclusion in the World Cup squad.
In the first ODI in Mohali, Ashwin had figures of 1/47 off his 10 overs, and in the second match in Indore, he bowled brilliantly, returning figures of 3/41 off seven overs. These performances contributed to India’s 2-1 series win against Australia.
The 2023 World Cup begins in Ashwin’s hometown of Chennai, where India faces Australia on October 8. While his inclusion in the main squad remains uncertain, his recent performances have certainly made a strong case for him.
Rohit (C), Hardik, Ashwin, Gill, Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Jadeja, Shardul, Bumrah, Siraj, Kuldeep, Shami, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav.
