Veteran Australian opener, Usman Khawaja, has come out in support of his teammate Glenn Maxwell following Maxwell’s disappointing performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Maxwell endured a tough season, scoring just 52 runs in 10 matches, with his highest score being 28.
Khawaja, however, believes that Glenn Maxwell’s IPL form should not be a concern ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024. He stated, “The IPL form is absolutely irrelevant. Maxy’s proven himself time and time again. Any player who’s performed over a long period of time understands that you can’t perform well every time you go out there.”
Khawaja emphasized that T20 cricket is a high-risk format and praised Maxwell’s attacking style, noting that if Maxwell gets one good innings, he will be back in form. He also highlighted that Maxwell’s approach won matches for Australia in the past and expressed confidence in Maxwell’s ability to bounce back.
Maxwell, who has been playing in the IPL since 2012, has faced criticism for his inconsistent performances. However, Khawaja’s support indicates that the Australian team has faith in Maxwell’s abilities as they prepare for the T20 World Cup.
Maxwell has been included in Australia’s 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup, and his team will be hoping that he can replicate his ODI form from last year’s World Cup in the upcoming tournament. Australia will open their T20 World Cup campaign against Oman on June 5 in Barbados.
The T20 World Cup 2024 is set to commence on June 1, with the United States and Canada playing the opening match.
