Rohit Sharma joins Mumbai for practice session ahead of Ranji second phase

Rohit Sharma has joined with Mumbai squad for training session ahead of the second phase of Ranji Trophy. The group trained for two hours at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Tuesday. Mumbai Ranji team is expected to train through the week to prepare for their sixth-round home match against Jammu and Kashmir.

Rohit Sharma returns to the roots

Whether India captain Rohit Sharma will take part in the game is not confirmed yet. But he is keen to train with the side in consultation with head coach Omkar Salvi. Rohit’s Test future is a topic of discussion, his captaincy is being questioned, moreover fate of his international cricket career is making headlines. In this situation, at 37, his return to train with first-class side sparks fresh debates. Meanwhile, a review meeting post BGT with the BCCI officials discussed everything from on-field to off-field.

Rohit’s performance in Australia had forced him to ‘drop’ from the side in the BGT finale at Sydney.  India’s head coach Gambhir also had stressed the importance of domestic cricket for players. “If you don’t give importance to domestic cricket, you will never get the desired players what you want in Test cricket.” He had insisted, “That is how much importance domestic cricket needs to be given. Not only one game. If they’re available and they have the commitment to play red-ball cricket, everyone should play domestic cricket. As simple as it can get.”

Will Rohit Sharma play first-class cricket again?

During an interview with Star Sports during the Sydney Test, Rohit Sharma had mentioned that he was not going anywhere. But his body language was also criticized. Fans and experts had called out the likes of Rohit and Virat for ruining India’s team balance.

Expectedly, all eyes will be on Mumbai’s squad for the second phase of Ranji Trophy scheduled to start from January 23. Mumbai Cricket Association is expected to announce the squad for the same later this week. The defending champions are currently third in Group A with three wins in five matches, only a point behind Jammu and Kashmir.
