Joe Root, England’s star batsman, has made a request to join England’s squad for their first One-Day International (ODI) against Ireland at Headingley on Wednesday. Root’s decision to participate in this match is driven by his desire to regain his 50-over form in preparation for the upcoming World Cup.

England’s initial 13-man squad for the Ireland series did not include any of their provisional 15-man World Cup squad members. However, Harry Brook was recently added to the final World Cup squad, replacing Jason Roy. As a result, Brook will now take a break during the Ireland series after a busy summer of cricket across different formats.

Root faced difficulties with form during England’s 3-1 series win against New Zealand, scoring just 6, 0, and 4 in the first three games. In the fourth ODI at Lord’s, he managed a scratchy 29 runs from 40 balls, highlighting his struggle to find rhythm in the 50-over format. Remarkably, Root has only batted 16 times in ODIs since the 2019 World Cup.

Luke Wright, England’s national selector, explained that Root expressed a desire to be part of the first ODI against Ireland to regain his rhythm in 50-over cricket. Wright praised Root’s dedication to improving his game, emphasizing that it demonstrates what makes him a world-class player.

“He just wanted a bit more time. It’s a great thing for someone to still have that desire to keep wanting to do more and more. It shows where he’s at with his game and what makes him such a world-class player that, when he doesn’t feel quite right, he still wants to tinker and do more. As much as we probably thought he needed a break as well, he just wanted another go.”

While Brook will rest during the Ireland series due to a quiet performance against New Zealand, Wright acknowledged that Brook had one of the busiest summers, participating in events like the Ashes, The Hundred, and these recent series. Wright highlighted the importance of balancing the need for more batting practice with the necessity for mental rest, noting that Brook will be given the latter before the World Cup.

Wright also indicated that Jason Roy might be involved in the second or third ODIs against Ireland, with the decision left to Roy’s discretion. Roy was informed that he was dropped from the World Cup squad after he couldn’t play against New Zealand due to back spasms on the mornings of the first and third ODIs.

“It would be silly of us to not give him a break. You always have to look at how much more batting does someone need versus what mental break do they need. I think in this case, we wanted to give him that break before the World Cup so he’s going to rest for that Ireland series.”

England has assembled a second-string squad for the Ireland series, captained by Zak Crawley, as the primary World Cup squad is set to travel to India on September 27 for warm-up games. The weather forecast for the series opener against Ireland suggests a high chance of rain.

Joe Root’s return to the ODI setup is an opportunity for him to regain his form and contribute significantly to England’s World Cup campaign, which begins next month.
