While the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi witnessed a spectacular display of cricketing talent during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 match between South Africa and Sri Lanka, it was a heartwarming father-son connection that truly captured the hearts of cricket enthusiasts worldwide.
In this electrifying encounter, South Africa’s 28-year-old pace sensation, Kagiso Rabada, delivered a fiery spell that left a significant mark on the tournament. His relentless pace and passion for the game were on full display, but what stole the limelight was the presence of his father, Mpho Rabada, in the stands.
Facing the daunting task of chasing a colossal target set by South Africa, Sri Lanka’s innings started on a shaky note as opener Pathum Nissanka was dismissed without scoring a run. This early setback paved the way for the arrival of the explosive wicketkeeper-batsman, Kusal Mendis.
Mendis unleashed a breathtaking onslaught on the Proteas’ bowlers, peppering the boundary ropes with sublime strokes that left South Africa’s skipper, Temba Bavuma, in disbelief. His attacking brand of cricket saw him reach a scintillating fifty off just 25 deliveries.
With remarkable ease, Mendis continued to dominate the proceedings and appeared destined for a match-winning century. However, fans were denied the pleasure of witnessing the fourth century of the match as Kagiso Rabada had other plans.
In the 13th over, Rabada bowled a menacing back-of-a-length delivery just outside the off-stump. Mendis, attempting a cut shot, inadvertently edged the ball behind the stumps. The catch was safely pouched by wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen, leaving Mendis in disbelief and disappointment.
Rabada, known for his fiery celebrations, didn’t disappoint on this occasion either. Following the crucial wicket, he unleashed an aggressive and exuberant celebration that showcased his passion and intensity for the game.
What added a unique twist to Rabada’s celebration was the presence of his father, “Mpho Rabada,” in the stands. After the fiery display on the field, Mpho Rabada was seen replicating his son’s iconic celebration. It was a heartfelt moment that underscored the bond between a father and his son, celebrating an extraordinary achievement on the grand stage of international cricket.
