In a thrilling warm-up encounter before the ODI World Cup 2023, New Zealand’s Kane Williamson made a remarkable comeback to international cricket, showcasing his class with the bat. After a six-month absence from competitive cricket due to injury, Williamson’s performance provided a major boost to the Kiwi squad.
The warm-up fixture witnessed an impressive display of batting from both Pakistan and New Zealand. Pakistan’s batters, including Mohammad Rizwan (103 retired hurt off 91), Babar Azam (80 off 84), and Saud Shaukeel (75 off 53), set the stage with a formidable total of 345 for five in their allotted 50 overs.
In response, New Zealand exhibited their batting prowess, successfully chasing down the mammoth target of 346. Key contributions came from opener Rachin Ravindra (97 off 72), Kane Williamson (54 off 50), Daryl Mitchell (59 retired hurt off 57), and Mark Chapman (65 not out off 41).
Kane Williamson’s return to the cricketing arena was highly anticipated, considering his extended absence due to a knee injury sustained during the IPL in March. While he will not feature in New Zealand’s World Cup opener against England on October 5, his performance against the Pakistan attack indicated his readiness on the batting front.
Williamson’s innings featured some exquisite shots, including a couple of backfoot punches in the cover region that demonstrated his proximity to his best form.
Opener Rachin Ravindra played a pivotal role in New Zealand’s successful run chase, showcasing explosive batting. Ravindra’s inning was filled with boundaries, with his first 24 runs coming solely from fours. In total, he smashed 16 fours and a six, providing an entertaining display of power hitting.
Number four batsman Daryl Mitchell played a crucial role in putting New Zealand on the brink of victory before retiring. Following his retirement, Mark Chapman and Jimmy Neesham took charge, steering New Zealand to a confidence-boosting win.
After the thrilling victory, New Zealand’s skipper Kane Williamson expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance. He highlighted the importance of getting valuable time in the middle, particularly for the batsmen.
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Williamson said, “Just great to get through with some batting in the middle which is really nice. [on the injured knee] It has held up pretty well and some icing now which is a part of the process. Wasn’t a reality 5 months ago, was fortunate with the recovery and nice to be named in the squad. Went pretty well and nice to build on that.”
“A fantastic hit-out. Pakistan are an outstanding side. It is an exercise and nice to compete and do all those things. There’s always things to work on, great batting performance on a really good surface. We head off to a different surface against a different opposition and we look forward to it ahead of our first game.”, he further explained.
The warm-up match against Pakistan served as an excellent exercise for New Zealand as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup. While acknowledging Pakistan’s formidable side, Williamson emphasized the team’s continuous improvement and readiness for their first official game.
With Kane Williamson’s return to form and a strong team performance, New Zealand is poised for an exciting campaign in the ODI World Cup 2023.
