MI Cape Town has made significant changes to its coaching staff for the upcoming SA20 2024 season. Former South African spin-bowling all-rounder Robin Peterson has been appointed as the head coach, and former Sri Lankan great Lasith Malinga will serve as the bowling coach.
Peterson, who was previously the general manager of MI Cape Town in the inaugural season, will take over from former Australian batter Simon Katich as the head coach. Malinga will replace former New Zealand all-rounder Jacob Oram as the bowling coach.
New coaching staff
Interestingly, Peterson and Malinga had previously worked together at the MI New York franchise during the inaugural Major League Cricket (MLC) season, where they guided the team to victory. Despite a challenging start, MI New York won the title in the USA-based competition earlier this year.
Hashim Amla will continue as the batting coach for MI Cape Town, and the franchise has retained key players like Rashid Khan, Kagiso Rabada, Sam Curran, and Dewald Brevis ahead of the upcoming SA20 auction.
MI Cape Town had a disappointing inaugural SA20 2022/23 season, finishing at the bottom of the points table despite having a star-studded lineup. They struggled with consistency, and their batters failed to deliver match-winning performances. This led to a major revamp in the coaching staff as they prepare for the SA20 2024 season.
The changes in coaching staff reflect MI Cape Town’s determination to bounce back and perform well in the upcoming season of the South African T20 league.
