Shubman Gill has etched his name in cricketing history by becoming the fastest Indian batsman to achieve 1,500 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs). This remarkable feat was accomplished during India’s 2023 Asia Cup match against Nepal in Pallekele when Gill scored a sensational half-century.
Gill entered the match needing 53 runs to reach the milestone and did so with ease, solidifying his reputation as a run-scoring machine in ODIs. The young Indian talent, who made his ODI debut in 2019, achieved this milestone in just 29 innings, with an impressive average of over 60 and a strike rate exceeding 100.
Prior to Gill’s achievement, Shreyas Iyer held the record for the fastest Indian to reach 1,500 ODI runs, achieving it in 34 innings. Gill’s outstanding performance with seven half-centuries and four centuries (including a double century) has made him a key asset to the Indian cricket team.
Earlier this year, Gill also became the fastest Indian and joint-second-fastest overall to reach 1,000 ODI runs, achieving the milestone in just 19 innings. This feat was matched only by Pakistan’s Imam-ul-Haq, with Fakhar Zaman holding the record for the fastest.
In addition to his remarkable run-scoring ability, Gill boasts the third-highest average in ODIs among batsmen with at least 1,000 runs. His average of over 60 places him behind former Netherlands all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate (67) and South Africa’s Rassie van der Dussen (60.58). Among Indians, only Virat Kohli follows Gill on this elite list, with an average of 57.08.
Shubman Gill’s consistent performances and record-breaking achievements continue to establish him as one of India’s brightest cricketing talents. Cricket fans around the world eagerly anticipate his future contributions to the sport. India will hope he continues his form in the World Cup.
