The Australian T20I squad for the South Africa tour has seen a significant twist as Matthew Wade is called up to replace Glenn Maxwell, who sustained an ankle injury during the team’s initial training session in Durban.

Maxwell’s setback deemed a “minor aggravation to his left ankle,” has prompted a cautious approach in light of the impending ODI World Cup in India, slated for October-November. Although already set to depart from the tour after the T20I series for the birth of his first child, Maxwell’s return to the squad for India remains a priority.

A precautionary approach

“We are taking a precautionary approach, given Glenn was heading home next week in any case,” affirmed Australia selector Tony Dodemaide. “We will monitor Glenn’s recovery with a view to him being available for the three-match ODI series in India in advance of the World Cup.”

Stepping into the breach, Matthew Wade is set to join the touring squad, fresh off his participation in the Hundred for London Spirit. His exclusion from the initial squad was more a strategic decision, allowing Josh Inglis an opportunity with the gloves rather than indicating a shift away from Wade’s role.

Matthew Wade steps up

Wade’s potential international retirement had been in the cards after the T20 World Cup in Australia last year. However, he reconsidered that decision in subsequent months. Chair of selectors George Bailey highlighted Wade’s continued significance in their future plans, including next year’s tournament in the West Indies and the USA.

“We do fully expect that [Wade] will come back into this T20 squad for that Indian series post the World Cup,” Bailey revealed. He emphasized the importance of providing Inglis, who has accumulated valuable experience across multiple formats, with playing time. While Alex Carey remains the primary wicketkeeper in ODIs, ensuring Inglis is primed for action in case of a backup requirement is paramount.

Maxwell’s absence from the squad’s middle order presents an opportunity for other players to seize the spotlight. Ashton Turner, who stepped in as a replacement for Steven Smith, and uncapped talent Aaron Hardie are among the contenders. The upcoming T20I series is set to commence in Durban on Wednesday, with all three matches scheduled to take place in the same city over a span of five days.
