In a high-stakes encounter between India and Pakistan during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai, a particular incident involving Indian batsman Virat Kohli drew sharp criticism from cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar. Kohli’s attempt to block a throw from a Pakistani fielder was deemed unnecessary and unsportsmanlike by Gavaskar.

The Controversial Incident

During the 21st over of India’s innings, bowled by Haris Rauf, Kohli played a shot between cover and point, attempting a quick single. As he reached the crease, he bent down to intercept the incoming throw from the fielder. This action was puzzling, as there was no Pakistani fielder positioned directly behind him to collect the ball. Captain Babar Azam was tracking the throw but was still some distance away, making Kohli’s intervention appear unwarranted.

Gavaskar’s Reaction

Commentating during the match, Sunil Gavaskar expressed his displeasure at Kohli’s conduct:

“Nobody is backing up. The fielder at midwicket would’ve had to dive, but there was no need for him to interfere with the progress of the ball. He’s lucky nobody has appealed.”

Gavaskar hinted at the possibility of an “obstructing the field” dismissal, noting that Kohli was fortunate no appeal was made.

Ramiz Raja’s Perspective

Former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja, who was co-commentating with Gavaskar, had earlier praised Kohli’s game awareness. However, following the incident, Raja humorously remarked:

“And here I was, raving about his game-awareness.”

Kohli’s Milestones Amidst Controversy

Despite the contentious moment, Virat Kohli achieved significant milestones during the match:

14,000 ODI Runs: Kohli became only the third batter in cricket history to surpass this mark, joining the elite company of Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara.

Fastest to 14,000: He surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record, reaching the milestone in fewer innings.

Most Catches by an Indian Fielder: Kohli took two catches in the first innings, overtaking Mohammad Azharuddin’s record of 156 catches in ODIs.

Match Overview

Pakistan, opting to bat first after winning the toss, posted a total of 241 runs. India’s bowling attack showcased discipline, with notable performances from the bowlers. In response, India aimed to chase down the target, with Kohli playing a pivotal role in the innings.
