Aakash Chopra was born on 19 September 1977 in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. He grew up in a cricket-loving family and showed promise from a young age. Encouraged by his family, he moved to Delhi to pursue professional cricket, joining the Delhi cricket circuit.
Chopra trained extensively at Delhi’s cricket academies, focusing on his defensive technique and patience as a batsman. His ability to bat for long hours earned him a place in the Delhi Ranji team, and he soon became one of the most reliable openers in domestic cricket.
Domestic Career – The Backbone of Indian Cricket
Aakash Chopra made his First-Class debut for Delhi in 1997. He was a dependable opening batsman who played long, patient innings, allowing aggressive stroke players to flourish.
Notable Domestic Achievements:
Scored over 10,000 First-Class runs at an average of 45.35.
Scored 29 centuries and 53 half-centuries in First-Class cricket.
Triple Century (301) – His highest First-Class score.*
Three-time Ranji Trophy Champion (One title with Delhi, two with Rajasthan).
Played for Himachal Pradesh in the later stages of his career.
Chopra’s biggest contribution came when he joined Rajasthan as a guest player. He played a key role in their Ranji Trophy triumphs in 2010 and 2011, making Rajasthan the first Plate division team to win the Ranji Trophy.

Aakash Chopra made his Test debut for India on 8 October 2003 against
New Zealand in Ahmedabad. He was brought in to partner
Virender Sehwag at the top of the order, providing stability to India’s opening pair.

IPL Career – A Brief Stint in T20 Cricket
Aakash Chopra played in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2008 and 2009. However, his batting style was not suited for the fast-paced T20 format, and he was dropped after scoring just 53 runs in 6 innings.
Later, he was signed by the
Rajasthan Royals in 2011, but he did not get many opportunities.
In 2015, he officially retired from all forms of cricket to focus on commentary and analysis.
