India’s World Cup campaign is yet again hit by injury issue. Post the loss against England, another bad news coming in for the men in blue. Vijay Shankar ruled out of the World Cup 2019 following injury. In all likelihood, Mayank Agarwal will be the replacement.
The official announcement from Team management
“Vijay sustained a non-displaced fracture of the left big toe, which will require a minimum of three weeks to heal. The injury rules him out of the ongoing World Cup,” stated a BCCI media release.
Injury Saga Continues For India
Indian all-rounder Vijay Shankar did not play the match against England yesterday at Edgbaston. Virat Kohli revealed at the toss that Vijay was out of the match because of a toe niggle. Now according to the BCCI senior official’s information given to PTI, Shankar is leaving the campaign as he was hit on the toe by a Jasprit Bumrah delivery and isn’t having a great time. “Vijay got hit on the toe by a Jasprit Bumrah delivery once again. His situation is not great and he won’t be able to take part in the tournament. He is going back home.”
Apart from Kohli, even Rohit Sharma had mentioned about Shankar’s injury. On Sunday morning before the game, Sharma had said about it explaining why Rishabh Pant was taken.”Vijay Shankar was supposed to play but before the game, he got hit on the toe by Jasprit (Bumrah) and he wasn’t fit. Every team will have these one or two changes happening every now and then.”
Mayank Agarwal to Replace Vijay Shankar
The source added that Mayank Agarwal, the Karnataka batsman will be the replacement in all possibilities. Mayank is an opener and inclusion of him will give an opportunity to KL Rahul to get back to the much talked about No.4 position. “The Indian team management is likely to ask for Mayank Agarwal as a replacement since he is an opener and also it might give KL Rahul a chance to get back to the No.4 position in case Rishabh Pant fails in the next two games.”
Shankar got his World Cup chance post the injury of Shikhar Dhawan. The Indian opener had to go back to India due to his thumb injury and KL Rahul, who was earlier batting at No.4 shifted to refill the opening slot. As a result, Shankar was included in playing eleven. But against England, Pant who replaced Dhawan in the team batted at Shankar’s position due to injury.
