Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have suffered a setback ahead of their IPL 2025 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) as pace bowler Akash Deep remains unavailable for selection. Despite recent progress in his recovery from a back injury, the right-arm pacer has not been deemed match-fit by the team management.
Akash Deep sustained a back injury earlier in the season, which forced him to miss LSG’s campaign opener. However, head coach Justin Langer had earlier provided a positive update, stating that the pacer was bowling at 90% intensity and had successfully completed his Yo-Yo test. Despite these encouraging signs, LSG has decided not to rush him back into action.
A source within the LSG camp confirmed that while Akash Deep has been training regularly, the medical staff advised against including him in today’s match to prevent aggravating the injury. “He is close to full fitness but needs a bit more time before he can be cleared for match intensity. The management does not want to take any unnecessary risks,” the source stated.
With Akash Deep unavailable, LSG will rely on their existing pace battery, which includes Mark Wood, Naveen-ul-Haq, and Shardul Thakur. The team is also awaiting the return of Avesh Khan. He is recovering from a knee injury and is expected to be back soon.
The absence of Akash Deep means that LSG’s bowling attack might lack some depth, especially in the powerplay. However, they will be hoping that their experienced pacers can step up against a strong SRH batting lineup featuring Heinrich Klaasen, Travis Head, and Aiden Markram.
There is no official confirmation on his exact return date. Akash Deep is expected to be available for selection in the coming matches. His progress will continue to be monitored closely by the LSG medical team. He could make a comeback in the latter stages of the tournament if he clears the final fitness tests.
