Mohammed Shami‘s long-awaited comeback was hurdled when his name wasn’t announced in India’s Playing XI for the First T20I against England. Concerns were raised about whether Shami was ready for a comeback yet.
Left arm pacer Arshdeep Singh has addressed concerns surrounding Shami’s fitness. Speaking after India’s comprehensive win in the first T20I, Arshdeep reassured fans that Shami is fully fit and gearing up for his return.

“Just yesterday, I was talking about the same thing with Shami Bhai,” Arshdeep said during the post-match interview with JioCinema. “The way the ball was coming out of his hand was absolutely amazing. With every delivery, you’d say, ‘Wow, how can such an incredible ball come out of someone’s hand like this!’ Just wait a few more days, and you’ll get to see that bowling.”
Arshdeep further likened Shami’s current form to his younger days. “It feels like the 22-year-old Shami Bhai is back,” he added, hinting at Shami’s likely inclusion in the second T20I.
Shami is making a comeback into international cricket after a long hiatus of 14 months. He last played for India at the ICC World Cup 2023. Shami was the tournament’s highest wicket-taker. In just 7 games, Shami managed to pick up 24 wickets at an average of 10.70. Following that, the pacer underwent surgery on his right Achilles tendon, which put him out of action for a while.
Shami has been named in India’s squad for the Champions Trophy. He is likely to share the new ball with Jasprit Bumrah. Shami was recently a part of Bengal’s domestic squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 trophy and Vijay Hazare trophy. In his last 5 domestic games (List A + T20), Shami managed to pick up 8 wickets. He also managed to score 76 runs with the bat.
