Shreyas Iyer’s registers important runs, saves India from early collapse

Shreyas Iyer continued his brilliant form in the Champions Trophy 2025 and became the highest scorer for India in the tournament with gritty knock against New Zealand. Shreyas who walked in early to rescue India from shaky display of batting scored 79 in India’s last group-stage match.

Shreyas plays a gritty knock

When India lost both the openers within the sixth over, all eyes were on Virat Kohli. However, Shreyas Iyer walked in after the captain left for just 1 5 runs and became the saviour of the team this time. India also lost Kohli (11) soon after Rohit left as Shreyas and Axar Patel started to build the innings. Shreyas started slowly and focused on a steady partnership withy Axar. He was in no hurry and instead remained calm throughout his knock against the Kiwis. Interestingly his first boundary came in the 17th over when he smashed William O’Rourke for three boundaries in four balls.

Shreyas with Axar Patel (98) added 98 runs for the fourth wicket and took India to 120/4 after being reduced to 30/3 inside the first powerplay. Although Axar Patel fell short of eight runs from reaching his half-century, Shreyas scored 79 off 98 balls before leaving in the 37th over. in the process he became India’s highest scorer in this Champions Trophy with 150  runs to his name including two fifties.

Shreyas Leaves but Hardik continues

Shreyas who remained calculative throughout the innings, did not miss the chance of hitting sixes after the dismissal of Axar Patel. He, after stabilizing India’s innings just started to open up with two maximums in the middle overs but soon gave a simple catch to Will Young in the 37th overs.

Once Shreyas Iyer left, India once against Started struggling as KL Rahul followed soon after adding 23 runs. Hardik Pandya who is still in the middle, added some valuable runs with Ravindra Jadeja (16) before the latter left with India’s score on 223/7. The onus is now on Hardik who is aiming for a half-century along with adding some crucial runs for India at the end.
