Ashwin Analyzes Dhoni’s Strategic Move: Ruturaj Gaikwad Takes Over CSK Captaincy

In a move reminiscent of his decision two years ago, MS Dhoni has surprised fans once again by stepping down as captain of the Chennai Super Kings just before the start of IPL 2024. This time, the legendary wicketkeeper-batsman has handed over the reins to the talented young opener Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Dhoni Prioritizes Team’s Future

While Dhoni’s leadership secured a remarkable title win for CSK last year, the move seems to be a strategic one, prioritizing the team’s long-term future.  This sentiment was echoed by former teammate Ravichandran Ashwin on his YouTube channel.

“This was an inevitable decision,” Ashwin stated. “He [Dhoni] keeps thinking about the well-being of the team. Because of that, he gave the captain’s armband to Jadeja 2 years ago. Now, he has given it to Ruturaj. This decision had to happen.”

Ashwin Predicts Dhoni’s Role in Gaikwad’s Captaincy

Speculating on Dhoni’s thought process, Ashwin believes the former skipper might have already groomed Gaikwad for this role. “I wouldn’t be surprised if Dhoni, while having dinner with the youngsters last year, told Ruturaj, ‘Brother, you are going to take charge. You can do all these things. I will be there, don’t worry,'” Ashwin said.

With Dhoni known for his composed demeanour under pressure, Ashwin expressed his confidence in Gaikwad’s leadership qualities. “I know Ruturaj, he is extremely cool and calm. He is a very good human being. I am extremely elated for him,” said the off-spinner.

Gaikwad Faces Familiar Foe in IPL Opener

The new era of CSK begins on Friday as they take on the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the opening match of IPL 2024. Gaikwad is expected to be met with a roaring welcome at Chepauk Stadium, CSK’s home ground. Interestingly, under Dhoni’s captaincy, CSK held an undefeated record against RCB at Chepauk since 2008. Gaikwad will be looking to continue this winning streak in his captaincy debut.
