Riyan Parag created history as he became the fourth-youngest captain in the Indian Premier League (IPL) during Rajasthan Royals’ opening match of IPL 2025 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The young Assam batter led RR for the first time, stepping in as captain while regular skipper Sanju Samson played as a specialist batter.

A Special Moment for Riyan Parag

Parag, who has been with Rajasthan Royals since his IPL debut, expressed his emotions at the toss.

“Means a lot, started here as a 17-year-old. Getting to fill in big shoes, very excited,” Parag said after winning the toss and opting to bowl first in their opening match of the IPL 2025.

The 23-year-old batter has previously captained Assam in domestic cricket. His leadership experience includes 23 matches across formats, which has prepared him well for this new challenge.

Youngest Captains in IPL History

Parag’s appointment makes him the fourth-youngest captain to lead a side in IPL history. Here’s the list that Riyan Parag joined in Rajasthan Royals’ opening match of IPL 2025:

Player
Age at Captaincy Debut
Virat Kohli 22y 187d
Steve Smith 22y 344d
Suresh Raina 23y 112d
Riyan Parag 23y 133d
Shreyas Iyer 23y 142d

Samson Plays as Impact Player

Sanju Samson, who recently underwent surgery, has not yet been cleared for wicketkeeping or fielding duties. Parag confirmed at the toss that Samson will feature as an Impact Player in the second innings. Samson is expected to open the batting with Yashasvi Jaiswal, forming a strong opening pair.

Royals Aim for Strong Start in IPL 2025

Parag’s captaincy debut comes against a formidable Sunrisers Hyderabad outfit. Backed by his domestic leadership experience and a talented squad, Parag will be eager to guide Rajasthan Royals to early wins in the tournament.

However, Parag had a very tough start to his captaincy. Sunrisers Hyderabad posted a mammoth total of 286/6 in 20 overs a gainst Rajasthan Royals. Debutant Ishan Kishan stole the show, hammering 106 runs off just 47 balls. SRH batters dominated from the start, smashing boundaries at will. Rajasthan Royals now face a massive chase to win their IPL 2025 opener.
