In a surprising turn of events during the second ODI at Indore, Australian opener David Warner added a unique twist to the game, taking everyone by surprise. Warner momentarily switched to a right-handed batting stance, leaving cricket fans and enthusiasts in awe. However, this unconventional move was not without its share of drama, ultimately culminating in controversy.
The extraordinary incident unfolded during the 13th over when Indian skipper KL Rahul introduced veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin into the attack. Ashwin, known for his off-spin prowess, had already bowled two overs, conceding 13 runs. However, the Indore pitch, renowned for its spin-friendly nature, began to assert itself. Ashwin, exploiting his off-spin skills, posed a unique challenge to Warner, who is a left-handed batsman.
To counter Ashwin’s mastery with the ball, Warner, known for his innovative approach to batting, decided to switch to a right-handed stance. This audacious move quickly spread like wildfire on social media, with fans and cricket pundits alike marvelling at Warner’s daring decision. The crowd at the Holkar Stadium in Indore erupted in jubilation as Warner struck Ashwin for a boundary on the third ball of the over.
However, the drama did not end there. In the very next over, with Warner persisting in his right-handed stance, Ashwin hatched a cunning plan to dismiss the Australian opener. Ashwin tossed the ball up, prompting Warner to attempt a reverse sweep shot while batting right-handed. The ball seemed to miss the bat and struck Warner’s pads, leading to a vehement appeal from the entire Indian team. The umpire wasted no time in raising his finger, signalling Warner’s dismissal.
The incident took a controversial turn as Warner engaged in a brief discussion with his partner, Josh Inglis, but ultimately decided against reviewing the decision. Replays later revealed a clear inside edge, suggesting that Warner had indeed made contact with the ball. However, his awkward position after attempting the shot led to confusion, and Warner failed to realize that he had hit the ball. It was a disappointing end to Warner’s unique batting experiment, and Australia found themselves in a tighter spot, having lost their 4th wicket.
Ravichandran Ashwin’s mastery didn’t conclude with Warner’s dismissal. On the final delivery of the same over, Ashwin claimed the wicket of Josh Inglis, elevating his wicket tally to an impressive three for the match. Ashwin’s strategic brilliance with the ball played a pivotal role in shaping the course of the game.
