Indian Hockey Goalkeeper PR Sreejesh to Retire After Paris Olympics 2024

Veteran goalkeeper and former captain of the Indian hockey team, P R Sreejesh, has announced that he will retire from international hockey following the Paris Olympics 2024. The 36-year-old, who has been a cornerstone of Indian hockey with 328 international caps, will be making his fourth Olympic appearance at the upcoming Games starting on July 26.

“As I prepare for my last dance in Paris, I look back with immense pride and forward with hope,” Sreejesh said in a press release from Hockey India. He expressed his gratitude for the unwavering support throughout his career, stating, “This journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, and I am forever grateful for the love and support from my family, teammates, coaches, fans, and Hockey India. Thank you for believing in me.”

Sreejesh’s career highlights include his debut at the 2010 World Cup and significant contributions to India’s triumphs, such as winning gold at the 2014 Asian Games and bronze at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta-Palembang. He also played a crucial role in the 2018 Asian Champions Trophy joint victory and the 2019 FIH Men’s Series Finals win in Bhubaneswar.

Reflecting on his journey and the upcoming challenge, Sreejesh shared, “My teammates have stood beside me through tough and ardent times. We all want to give our absolute best here in Paris, and certainly, the desire is to change the color of our medal.”

As Sreejesh steps into his final international tournament, his legacy as one of India’s most accomplished hockey players is firmly established. His leadership and exceptional goalkeeping skills have left an indelible mark on Indian hockey, inspiring future generations to follow in his footsteps.
