Jasprit Bumrah Advised Bed Rest After Back Swelling

Jasprit Bumrah’s return to cricket is hanging in the balance, with the pacer currently recovering from swelling in his back. According to reports in The Times of India, the initial word is that it’s just swelling, but given his history of back injuries, the BCCI is being cautious. Bumrah has been advised bed rest at home, with the next steps to be decided once the swelling subsides.

Concerns Over Bumrah’s Condition

After a long and grueling tour of Australia, Bumrah returned home last week. While the swelling doesn’t appear to be too severe, stakeholders aren’t taking any chances. The last thing they want is to aggravate his condition, especially with a packed cricket calendar ahead.

“Bed rest doesn’t sound great,” a source told TOI. “Let’s hope it’s just muscle swelling and not a disc issue. With someone like Bumrah, you have to be extra cautious. Wrap him in cotton wool and preserve his talent.”

Former India strength and conditioning coach Ramji Srinivasan weighed in, saying the recovery time depends on the type of swelling.

“If it’s muscle swelling due to a tear, recovery depends on the grade of the tear. If it’s a disc bulge, it could take longer,” he explained.

Waiting on the Medical Report

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is waiting for a detailed medical report before making any decisions about Bumrah’s return. He will need to report to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, but there’s no fixed date yet.

“Bumrah could check in at the NCA next week, but nothing is set in stone,” a source revealed. “For now, he’s been told to rest at home. Once the swelling reduces, we’ll know more about the next steps.”

A Tight Schedule Ahead for Team India

India has a packed cricket calendar, with the Champions Trophy, IPL, and a tour of England all lined up. Bumrah’s availability will be crucial, and the selectors are keen to manage his workload carefully.

The selectors are set to announce the provisional squad for the Champions Trophy soon. They have until February 13 to make changes, and Bumrah’s inclusion will depend on his recovery progress.
