Billy Stanlake’s Big Bash League season is over. The tall Aussie quick fractured his right shoulder while taking a catch for the Hobart Hurricanes, ruling him out for the rest of the tournament. The injury happened during their match against the Melbourne Renegades, and it’s a big blow for both Stanlake and the Hurricanes.
Stanlake was trying to catch Renegades opener Josh Brown when he hurt his shoulder. He managed to bowl just one over before leaving the field in pain. After a quick Q-scan, the news wasn’t good — a fracture.
Despite missing their key pacer, the Hurricanes went on to win the match by four wickets. They’re now sitting pretty at the top of the points table with six wins from eight games, securing their spot in the finals.

There’s no word yet on when Stanlake might return to cricket. It’s a tough break for the 30-year-old, who last played for Australia in 2019. His most recent T20I was against Pakistan, where he bowled economically but didn’t pick up any wickets. His last ODI was against India, where he went wicketless and conceded 49 runs.
In his international career, Stanlake has played seven ODIs and 19 T20Is. He’s known for his height and pace, making him a handy option in the shorter formats.
Stanlake isn’t the only player to suffer a setback. Sydney Thunder’s all-rounder Daniel Sams is out of the tournament too. Sams collided with teammate Cameron Bancroft during a match and won’t be returning this season.
Sams shared his thoughts on social media, thanking fans for their support.
“I just want to express my gratitude to everyone who has supported me throughout my recovery,” he said. “The messages of encouragement and care have meant so much to me.”
Sams admitted he’s disappointed to miss out but is proud of his team’s performance so far.
“I’m super disappointed not to be out there on the field, contributing to the success the boys are having. But I’m incredibly proud of this group and excited to see what they can achieve for the rest of the season.”
The league stage of the BBL season wraps up on January 18. The Hurricanes have two games left, while Thunder have one more to go before the finals begin.
Both teams have been solid this season. The Hurricanes have already booked their finals spot, and the Thunder will be hoping to finish strong despite missing Sams.
