In a surprising turn of events, Daryl Mitchell’s remarkable century against India in the World Cup 2023 match has come under fire, with former cricketer-turned-commentator Simon Doull leading the charge in criticizing Mitchell’s approach.
Daryl Mitchell, who delivered an impressive performance by becoming the highest run-scorer in the match with 130 runs off 127 balls, found himself at the centre of scrutiny despite his substantial contribution. Doull, along with several fans, accused Mitchell of playing too slowly, both when he was inching towards his century and after reaching the milestone.
In the 41st over of the game, Mitchell achieved a run-a-ball century, a notable accomplishment. However, it was at this juncture that New Zealand supporters anticipated a shift in momentum, with the death overs commencing. New Zealand was positioned at 222 for the loss of 4 wickets, and expectations were high for the team to surpass 300 and potentially reach 320-330. With Mitchell, who was well-set, and Glenn Phillips, a renowned hitter, at the crease, these expectations seemed well within reach.
Despite the initial optimism, New Zealand’s performance in the closing stages of the match did not live up to expectations. The team managed to secure only 51 runs in the last 9 overs of the game, ultimately ending their innings at 273. What initially appeared to be a solid score of 320-330 was reduced to a less commanding 273, thanks to a brilliant display of death bowling by India’s Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah.
During the critical phase from the end of the 41st over to the penultimate ball of the innings when he was dismissed, Daryl Mitchell recorded only 2 fours and a six in the 27 balls he faced. This conservative approach led to fans questioning whether Mitchell was more focused on individual statistics rather than the team’s overall objective.
The repercussions of the slowing run-rate during that phase became evident as India comfortably chased down New Zealand’s 273 with 2 overs to spare. If New Zealand had managed to reach the 320-run mark, the immense pressure on India, who had already lost 5 wickets, might have resulted in a different outcome.
In light of this, Simon Doull voiced his criticism of Daryl Mitchell’s approach, stating, “He left some runs when he was going through the 90s.” While Mitchell’s century was indeed a remarkable feat, it’s evident that in the dynamic world of limited-overs cricket, individual achievements must sometimes be weighed against their impact on the overall team performance.
