WTC Final 2023: Pat Cummins looking forward for the clash after a ‘missed opportunity’ in the last cycle

In the midst of the Ashes series, Australia’s captain Pat Cummins acknowledged that a number of people had forgotten about their World Test Championship (WTC) final match against India. The right-arm speedster added that the fight between India and New Zealand two years ago felt like a lost chance.

Australia won 11 out of 19 Test matches, finishing first in the 2021–2023 WTC cycle. They only lost one series throughout their reign, a 2-1 loss to India earlier this year.

Australia lost out on making the WTC final the last time around because of their subpar over rate against India at the MCG Test, which cost them a few points.

Pat Cummins said

It didn’t sink in, according to Cummins, until they witnessed India and New Zealand competing in the final in Southampton two years prior. Therefore, the 29-year-old wants to see Australia win the championship.

“We’ve got India in the World Test Championship final first, which I think a lot of people forgot. I think being new, it probably didn’t hit us until the game was actually played, and you saw over there [in England] New Zealand did well and you wish you were there. It feels like second time around it’s got a little bit more on it. It felt like a big missed opportunity that first one. So it certainly gives a bit more context to every series now, something big to play for,” Cummins told The Age.

Cummins praised the WTC final concept, saying it gives the smaller series more relevance. He said:

“The big series, say Ashes or India series where you play four or five Test matches, are obviously big battles, whereas the more common series where you play two or three in a series, it [the World Test Championship] gives them a bit more global context and something a bit extra to play for.”
