The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) has unveiled a brand-new franchise, the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons, marking a historic moment for the region. This exciting development replaces the Jamaica Tallawahs, which ceased operations after the 2023 season. The Falcons will take flight at the iconic Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua, their designated home ground, bringing top-level cricket back to the island after a decade-long absence.
CPL acquired the Tallawahs franchise, demonstrating their commitment to maintaining a Jamaican team. The league aims to reintroduce a Jamaica-based franchise by 2025, potentially expanding the tournament to seven teams. This decision comes after Florida-based businessman Kris Persaud, who previously owned the Tallawahs, expressed challenges in managing the Jamaican side and opted to establish a new venture with the Falcons.
With renewed energy and ambition, Persaud aims to establish the Falcons as a dominant force in the CPL. “We are brand new; we are here, we are ready… let’s get ready to play!” he declared. He envisions the Falcons bringing a unique energy to the league, fostering a winning culture both on and off the field. He sees the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium as their “special home base” and anticipates creating lasting memories for fans in Antigua.
The island nation of Antigua warmly welcomes the Falcons, recognizing their rich cricketing history and embracing the potential for future glory. Persaud emphasized, “Antigua is our home… This country has a rich cricket history and the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons will create more great history on these shores. It is now time for the Falcons to fly high!”
The upcoming CPL season, scheduled from August 28 to October 6, will mark the official debut of the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons. Cricket fans can expect thrilling matches at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, while the final showdown will once again take place in Guyana at The National Stadium in Providence.
The arrival of the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons injects fresh excitement into the Caribbean Premier League. With a passionate owner, a dedicated home ground, and the unwavering support of Antiguan fans, the Falcons are poised to make a significant impact on the tournament. As the countdown to CPL 2024 begins, cricket enthusiasts around the world eagerly await the Falcons’ inaugural flight, ready to witness a new chapter unfold in the vibrant world of Caribbean cricket.
