Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The all-rounder is suffering a serious back injury. Cricket Australia confirmed the news in a press release. Marsh was the vice-captain of the Australian ODI team.
It has been a tough year for Marsh. His Test performances against India were below expectations. He managed only 73 runs in seven innings during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
He was then dropped for the final Test at the SCG, making way for Beau Webster.
After the series, Marsh played just one BBL match before resting for three weeks to recover ahead of the Champions Trophy. However, his back failed to improve.
In a statement, Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed Marsh’s withdrawal.
“Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of the upcoming ICC Men’s Champions Trophy with ongoing lower back pain and dysfunction.” the CA statement read.
“His lower back pain flared in recent weeks leading the NSP to make the longer-term decision for Marsh to complete a more extended period of rehabilitation.”
There is no clear recovery timeline for Mitchell Marsh. Hence, his IPL 2025 stint with Lucknow Super Giants is also in doubt.
Australia now needs a replacement. Jake Fraser-McGurk could be the frontrunner. He struggled against Pakistan earlier this season but brings explosive power at No.3.
Selectors could also look at an all-rounder like Will Sutherland, who played ODIs last year before suffering his own back injury. Beau Webster and Cooper Connolly are other possible options.
With Pat Cummins also doubtful due to an ankle injury, Australia might need a new captain for the tournament.
Steve Smith, Travis Head, and Josh Inglis are among the options. Head has led the T20I team. Smith is an ex-captain. Inglis has also led Australia on a few occasions.
Despite his injury, Marsh has been a crucial player for Australia in ODI cricket.
He was a key performer in Australia’s 2023 World Cup win, scoring centuries against Pakistan and Bangladesh. Since March 2023, he has averaged 44.54 with a strike rate of 109.13 in ODIs.
He was also named the Allan Border Medalist in 2024, marking a successful comeback to international cricket.
